How We Teach Design and Technology at Waterside Academy
At Waterside Academy, Design and Technology (DT) is all about creativity, problem-solving, and practical skills. Our curriculum inspires pupils to think like designers and engineers, combining imagination with technical know-how to create purposeful products.
Each project begins with a design phase, where children generate ideas, explore materials, and plan their creations. They then bring their ideas to life, learning to use tools, materials, and mechanisms to make their designs a reality. From building windmills in Key Stage 1 to creating moving models and scaled-up structures in Key Stage 2, every project develops practical skills and fosters creativity.
Children are encouraged to test and evaluate their work, reflecting on successes and identifying ways to improve. This process not only refines their technical abilities but also builds confidence and resilience.
By the time they leave Waterside Academy, pupils are skilled, innovative thinkers, ready to apply their DT knowledge in real-world contexts.
