Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE)
How We Teach PSHE at Waterside Academy
At Waterside Academy, we believe that Personal, Social, Health, and Economic (PSHE) education is essential in preparing our pupils for life. Through our comprehensive programme, we aim to equip children with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive in a diverse and ever-changing world.
Our PSHE curriculum is based on the Jigsaw PSHE scheme, which uses a mindful and enquiry-based approach to support children’s personal development. Lessons are designed to help pupils explore important topics such as relationships, health, well-being, and citizenship in an age-appropriate way. The programme also incorporates mindfulness practices to develop children’s self-awareness, resilience, and emotional regulation.
The curriculum is divided into six thematic units, or "puzzles," which are revisited each year to build depth and understanding. These themes include Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me. Each unit is structured to ensure progression, with concepts and skills building as pupils move through the school.
PSHE lessons are engaging and interactive, encouraging children to reflect on their own experiences and learn to respect and appreciate the perspectives of others. Pupils develop critical thinking and decision-making skills, empowering them to navigate real-life challenges with confidence.
By the time children leave Waterside Academy, they are well-prepared to lead healthy, safe, and responsible lives, equipped with the understanding and empathy needed to contribute positively to their communities and the wider world.
