How We Teach Modern Foreign Languages at Waterside Academy
At Waterside Academy, we believe that learning a modern foreign language is an essential part of preparing children for life in a connected and diverse world. We teach Spanish throughout Key Stage 2, giving pupils the opportunity to develop practical language skills and a deeper appreciation of global cultures.
Our Spanish lessons are designed to be fun, engaging, and accessible for all. Through activities like songs, games, and interactive challenges, children build confidence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. From learning simple vocabulary and phrases in Year 3 to expressing opinions and holding conversations by Year 6, pupils develop their skills step by step, supported by a clear and structured programme.
We use the Language Angels scheme, a high-quality resource that allows our teachers to deliver exciting and meaningful lessons. Every child has at least one dedicated Spanish lesson each week. These lessons are brought to life with interactive resources, group activities, and even opportunities to explore Spanish culture.
At Waterside Academy, we aim to help children leave primary school as confident Spanish speakers with a solid understanding of the language. They also gain insight into the similarities and differences between Spanish and English while developing a curiosity about other cultures and traditions.
