How We Teach Mathematics at Waterside Academy
At Waterside Academy, we use the Herts for Learning ESSENTIALmaths framework to deliver a structured and engaging mathematics curriculum. This approach ensures progression in core skills and concepts, enabling every child to develop confidence and fluency in mathematics.
Our lessons follow a step-by-step approach, using concrete materials, pictorial representations, and abstract methods (CPA) to build a deep understanding of mathematical ideas. Children are encouraged to explore various strategies, discuss their reasoning, and apply their learning to solve real-life problems.
We emphasise mental fluency, helping pupils master key skills such as number bonds, times tables, and efficient calculation strategies. Regular practice and problem-solving activities enable children to build confidence and resilience, while tailored support ensures all pupils can succeed.
By the time children leave Waterside Academy, they are fluent in mathematics and equipped with the problem-solving skills they need for future learning and everyday life.
