How We Teach Science at Waterside Academy

At Waterside Academy, we deliver an engaging and inclusive science curriculum using the Kapow Primary Science scheme which was introduced in January 2025. Our aim is to ignite curiosity, develop critical thinking, and foster a deep understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics. By exploring the wonders of the natural world, pupils gain knowledge and skills that empower them to question, investigate, and analyse the phenomena around them.

Our science curriculum is designed to ensure progression, revisiting essential knowledge and skills with increasing complexity. Lessons integrate hands-on activities with conceptual understanding, building pupils’ scientific knowledge while developing their ability to work scientifically. The curriculum also highlights the real-world relevance of science, helping pupils appreciate its role in addressing global challenges and inspiring them for future applications.

From Early Years, pupils engage in sensory exploration and practical investigations to nurture their natural curiosity. As they progress through the school, they develop the foundational knowledge required in areas such as plants, materials, forces, and space. Cross-curricular links further enhance learning, allowing pupils to connect their scientific knowledge with other subjects and real-life contexts.

By the time pupils leave Waterside Academy, they will have developed a lifelong curiosity for science, the ability to think critically, and the foundational skills to succeed in their future studies and beyond. We aim to ensure all pupils meet the national curriculum expectations for science and are equipped to engage meaningfully with the scientific challenges of the future.
