How We Teach Computing at Waterside Academy

At Waterside Academy, we provide an exciting and forward-thinking computing curriculum designed to prepare children for the digital world. Using iCompute programme, we aim to spark creativity, develop problem-solving skills, and build confidence in using technology. From understanding how computers work to creating their own digital content, our pupils develop skills that will support them throughout their lives.

Our curriculum is carefully planned to ensure children build on their knowledge year by year. Lessons are hands-on and engaging, helping children to learn not only the technical skills of computing but also how to think critically and solve problems. Through activities like programming, creating animations, and exploring how the internet works, children are encouraged to be curious, innovative, and independent.

From the youngest pupils in Early Years to those preparing to move on to secondary school, we ensure that every child has the opportunity to develop their digital skills. For our youngest learners, this might involve simple activities like exploring patterns or learning about staying safe online. As children progress through the school, they tackle more complex challenges such as coding, designing apps, and understanding how data is used in the real world.

At Waterside Academy, we believe that computing is about much more than just learning to use technology – it’s about preparing children to navigate and contribute to a digital future with confidence and creativity. By the time they leave us, pupils are equipped with the skills, knowledge, and understanding they need to thrive in an increasingly digital society.
