How We Teach Geography at Waterside Academy
At Waterside Academy, our geography curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity about the world, its people, and the dynamic relationship between them. Using the Kapow Primary Geography scheme, we aim to build pupils’ knowledge of places, environments, and cultures, while encouraging them to explore how the natural and human worlds interact and evolve.
Our curriculum introduces children to key geographical concepts such as place, space, interdependence, and sustainability. From understanding the features of their local area to examining global climates, trade, and ecosystems, pupils develop a deep and meaningful connection with the world around them.
From Early Years, children begin by exploring their immediate surroundings through hands-on activities like map-making and sensory nature walks. As they move through the school, they learn to interpret maps, investigate global landscapes, and study topics such as rivers, volcanoes, population changes, and environmental impact. Fieldwork plays a vital role in our geography curriculum, allowing pupils to investigate real-world issues and apply their learning in practical ways.
Our lessons also promote cultural awareness and diversity, helping pupils to appreciate the richness of different communities and the importance of working together to protect our planet. By engaging with global challenges such as climate change and sustainable development, children learn how their actions can make a difference.
When pupils leave Waterside Academy, they will not only have a strong geographical understanding but also the curiosity, critical thinking skills, and sense of responsibility needed to navigate and contribute to an interconnected world.
