How We Teach RE At Waterside Academy

At Waterside Academy, Religious Education is taught using the Discovery RE programme, which adopts an enquiry-based approach to inspire curiosity and critical thinking. Pupils explore a wide range of religions and worldviews, including Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, Sikhism, and Humanism, with an emphasis on understanding beliefs, practices, and their impact on individuals and communities.

Lessons are thoughtfully designed to be progressive and engaging, enabling pupils to develop their knowledge and skills as they move through the school. Each year builds on previous learning, revisiting themes like Christmas and Easter in greater depth while introducing new concepts and traditions. Enquiry questions encourage children to investigate, analyse, and reflect on religious and philosophical ideas, fostering both knowledge and empathy.

The programme also integrates Spiritual, Moral, Social, and Cultural (SMSC) development and British values, promoting respect and tolerance for diverse beliefs. Mindfulness practices are incorporated to support pupils’ reflection and spiritual growth.

Through engaging activities and critical discussions, pupils gain the tools to evaluate different perspectives and form their own considered views. By the time they leave Waterside Academy, children are religiously literate, open-minded, and equipped with a deep appreciation of the diverse world around them.
